Red-raspberry ellgitannins protect human cells from the cancer-causing agents in tobacco smoke, food additives and petroleum products. They act as scavengers to bind and inactivate cancer-causing chemicals. European studies also demonstrate that elligitannins lower the incidence of birth defects, promote wound healing, reduce heart disease, may even reverse chemically induced liver fibrosis, and stop viruses from reproducing.
Studies at the Hollings Cancer Institute by Dr. Daniel Nixon confirm that 40 mgs of elligitannins daily (the amount in one cup of red raspberries or 2 gm or raspberry-seed flour) can prevent the development of cancer cells. At low concentrations, the ellagic acid this dosage produces in the body slows the growth of cancer cells in the cervix, colon, breast, pancreas, prostate, and esophagus. At higher concentrations, it can literally tell the cancer cells to kill themselves.
